Debra Ann Lummus

Fairview, Utah

On July 14, 2019, Debra Ann Wood Lummus, 63, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family in Fairview. Debbie was born on June 16, 1956 to Valden Jay and Joan Eloise Geertsen Wood in Salt Lake City, and was raised in Kearns. Debbie loved her childhood and had a close relationship with her parents and siblings. She learned from her father to love fishing and camping, and enjoyed spending time outdoors with her family. Debbie was a talented pianist and accompanied her high school orchestra, school musical, and other functions in the community. Debbie was an excellent student; she enrolled in nursing courses at Weber State College one week after graduating high school, and earned her degree in two years.

At age 20, Debbie went to a Church dance where she met Charles Joseph Lummus. After Joe asked her to dance, Debbie mentioned few other boys had asked her to dance that evening. He responded, "That’s because they’re afraid of angels." Debbie and Joe fell in love quickly and married six months later in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on February 11, 1977. They lived in the Salt Lake area until 1990, when they purchased land and built a home in Milburn.

Debbie had ten children who were her greatest joy. She loved each of her children individually for their unique traits and talents. She shared her love of the outdoors with her children by working alongside them in her garden, taking them camping often and teaching them to fish—which she sometimes did by herself with several kids in tow. Debbie fostered a love of music in many of her children by teaching them piano lessons. She loved hearing music in her home, and especially loved to play the piano as her family sang carols each Christmas season.

Above all, Debbie loved the Lord and had a strong testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which was exemplified in the way she lived. Debbie devoted her entire life to serving others. She was selfless, compassionate, and endlessly kind. She gave freely of her time and resources to anyone in need. Debbie is beloved by everyone she knew, including countless families she associated with in her work as a hospice nurse throughout the Sanpete Valley.

Debbie is survived by her mother, Joan Wood; husband, Joe Lummus; sons, Joe (Camille), John (Whitney), Jacob (Sariah); daughters, Cora (Robert) Allred, Caroline (Jason) Covington, Cathy (Lane) Allred, Angela Lummus, Sarah (Clarence) Gold, Debbie Jo (Josh) Thompson, Marianne Lummus; 27 grandchildren; a sister, Valerie Walker; and brother, Kenny Wood. She is preceded in death by her father, Valden Wood; and brothers: Jim and Don Wood.
