Henry Dean Malmgren, 98, passed away April 6, 2012 in Cedar City. He was born October 18, 1913 in Spanish Fork to Henry and Sophia Jane "Jean" Smith Malmgren. Dean graduated from Gunnison Valley High School in 1931. He served four years in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Della Munk May 1, 1945 in Salt Lake City. Their marriage was solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple in 1963. They lived their entire married life in Centerfield. Della passed away in 1998. Following high school, until WWII and directly after the war, Dean worked in agriculture for his uncle, primarily as a bee keeper. He served as Postmaster of Centerfield, retiring after 30 years of service. He served on the Centerfield Town Board. He was active in American Legion Oliver Russell Post #105 in Centerfield for over 60 years, holding many positions in the Post and the District. He helped raise and lower the flags over the veteran’s graves in the Centerfield Cemetery on Memorial Day for many years. He was actively involved in the Boy Scouts of America and Boys State on a local level. He was an active member of the LDS Church and served in many positions. Dean and Della served for 10 years in the LDS Extraction Program. Dean loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping with his family and friends.
Dean is survived by son, Todd (Karen) Malmgren, Portland, Oregon; daughter, Anne (Craig) Zufelt, Enoch; sister, Ruby Scott, San Simeon, California; five grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two sisters and one grandson.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. in the Centerfield LDS Ward Chapel,210 South Main. Friends may call at the ward chapel in Centerfield from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Interment will be in the Centerfield Cemetery, with military honors by the American Legion Oliver-Russell Post #105. Funeral Directors: Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti.
