Dayne Mathis
Monroe, Utah
Dayne Andrus Mathis, 93, husband, father, grandfather, teacher, farmer, servant of God, passed away peacefully at the home he built, on November 22, 2018. He was born in St. George, UT to Gordon W. and Pauline Andrus Mathis, January 14, 1925.
A child of the depression, Dayne had many happy memories regarding his association with family members. He spent many hours on the Arizona Strip wrangling cattle and riding horses which led to the great love he had for farming and ranching. He graduated from Dixie High School and promptly joined the Army Air Corp serving for over two years in India during WWII. Upon his honorable discharge he returned to St. George and began courting a neighbor girl, Muriel Cannon, with whom he had gone to school and church their entire lives. They were married in the St. George Temple on August 3, 1946 and began their 72 years of life together. Taking advantage of the GI Bill, he received his education at Dixie College and graduated from Utah State University with a degree in Vocational Agriculture. Upon graduation he began his 34 year teaching career. In 1951 he moved to Monroe, UT to teach school. In addition to teaching, he purchased a farm which he enjoyed working the remainder of his life.
He served his community and church serving as mayor of Monroe, bishop of the Monroe North Ward and many other civic and church callings. His favorite was serving in the Manti Temple with his sweetheart for 23 years, three of which were in the temple presidency.

Nielson, Monroe; Robert (Annette) Mathis, Alamosa, CO; John (Wendy) Mathis, Vernal; and Pauline (Lenard) Barney, West Valley; foster son, Harold (Suzie) Brown, Window Rock, AZ; 18 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Richard (Ferris) Mathis, St. George; sister-in-law, Cleo Mathis, St. George.
