Cula Ekker

Bicknell, Utah

We are saddened by the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and sister, Cula Taft Ekker, 89, on Tuesday April 1, 2014 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Cula was born September 14, 1924 in Bicknell, to Milton Lee and LaVern Forsyth Taft. Cula married her love, Glen S Ekker, on December 31, 1941 in Reno, Nevada. They lived in Wayne County their entire lives, but called Bicknell home. This is where Cula raised her family of 3 children and owned /operated the Sunglow Café. Glen preceded her in death June 29, 2003.

Cula served as a board member of the Utah Restaurant Association and was inducted into the restaurant association Hall Of Fame in 1988 for her "homemade exotic pies" including Sweet Pickle and Pinto Bean, as well as her long time service as a board member.

Gardening was one of Cula’s many talents; this was evidenced by her yard always being in beautiful condition. She was awarded for her love by The Salt Lake Tribune with the Regional Civic Beautification ward in 1978.

Many young women in Wayne County wore the beautiful one-of-a-kind prom gowns designed and sewn by Cula.

Cula was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she fulfilled her many callings admirably.

Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our mother, grandmother and sister, but we rejoice in the many happy memories we have shared.

Cula is survived by her sons; Alfred (Janell) Ekker, Moreland, ID and Milton Kip (Karen) Ekker, Park City; 7 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Milton (Jerrie) Taft, and sister, Dixie (Joe) Bowler, both of Bicknell.

She is also preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Glenna Noss; brother, Karl Taft and sisters: Arleen Johnson and Juanita Rogers.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. in the Thurber Ward Chapel in Bicknell, where friends may call from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. Burial will be in the Bicknell City Cemetery. Funeral Directors: Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti.
