Chuck Schmidt
Glenwood, Utah
Charles "Chuck" Lee Schmidt, 69, slipped away peacefully surrounded by his loving family, comfortably at home in Glenwood after a long, valiant battle with many illnesses on Friday, January 29, 2016. He was born on May 2, 1946 in Chicago, Illinois, where he grew up and was always known as "Butch".
Chuck moved to Indiana and joined the Army in 1963. He served as a Sargent in the Vietnam War training soldiers for battle. After relocating to Utah he joined the 222 nd National Guard unit in Richfield. Once retired, he went into the 419 th supply unit as a reserve. When this unit was called to duty during Desert Storm, he volunteered to go where he proudly served his country yet again.
On March 3, 1988, Chuck married the love of his life, Gayla Jean Pollock, in Richfield. He was her savior, her best friend, and her soul mate. They shared 27 dedicated years together. He lived every day to make her happy and see her smile. His only regret would be breaking his promise to never leave her.
He was the dad he didn’t have to be to seven children. Chuck worked hard every day to provide much more than a house, he provided a home with morals, values, support and he loved his kids more than life itself.
Chuck loved reading, reloading, hunting, fishing, camping, and exploring. He earned two bachelors degrees: one in psychology and one in sociology. He touched many lives as a home teacher, Reserve Richfield City Police Officer, mechanic, and laborer. He later took up a career in bail bonds where he helped many people and changed many lives. Everyone always knew him by his famous offer, "If you need anything, give me a call."
Chuck will be deeply missed, and his memory cherished by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was a man made of iron, strong and indestructible; yet he was kind and giving when needed. Chuck had the most amazing will to survive. He lived many years on borrowed time, but he never thought about himself or his daily struggle. He was only concerned about his family and what they needed.
There will never be another...we will miss you Schmidt!
He is survived by his loving wife, Gayla; his children: Jimmy (Deena) Ogden, Richfield; Lisa (Burtis) Davis, Glenwood; Weslie (Jackie) Ogden, Richfield; Neena Ogden (Weston Maxfield), Sigurd; Brenda (Russ) Childs, Richfield; Christina (Jeff) Lamprecht, Taylorsville; Melissa (Mike) Seipp, Provo; 22 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson; cousin, Frank Barger, Florida.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles & Golda June Schmidt; and his little dog, Peanut.
Private family memorial services will be held Friday at the Magleby Mortuary. Military rites by the 222 nd Richfield Unit of the National Guard. A celebration of life for all of Chuck’s family and friends will be held at a later date. Funeral Directors: Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti.
