Cecil Virgil Mason
1919 – 2017
Cecil Virgil Mason was born March 13, 1919 to Philip Ralph and Estella Lavean Shaw Mason. He was born and raised in Aurora, UT with his seven siblings.
Cecil chose to spend three years serving his country in the Civilian Conversation Core working on projects at Fishlake, Bryce Canyon, and Zions.
He was married to his sweetheart Farrel Pope on January 4, 1943 in the Manti temple. They lived in Richfield until 1955 then moved to Salt Lake. They had three children – Cecelia, Melanie, and Gary. Sadly, Cecelia suffered from an unknown illness and died at the early age of 5 and Melanie suffered from PKU which left her mentally handicapped for her entire life. Cecil was a patient and caring husband and father.
Cecil spent his life as a heavy haul truck driver carrying unique pieces of equipment all over the country. He spent his later life telling his grandkids wonderful stories of delivering rocket motors to Florida, transformers to Castledale, locomotive engines to Heber, and the first load of steel to the Flaming Gorge Dam.
He enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing, and gardening. Every summer vacation was spent at Fish Lake sometimes in the snow. He loved more than anything spending time with his family. He would spend hours telling stories of his long and fulfilling life.
Cecil was an active Latter day Saint serving in many callings over the years, enjoying most his service in the Sunday School Presidency in the Cannon 8th Ward.
Cecil passed away in the early morning of April 23, 2017. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Farrell Pope, his daughter Cecelia, and most of his siblings. He is survived by his children Melanie Mason of American Fork and Gary (Gaye) Mason of South Jordan; grandchildren Garon (Sarah) Mason, Giacobbi (Lee) Ertmann, Greg (Elizabeth) Mason, and Grant (Whitney) Mason all of South Jordan; 8 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Margie Mason; and siblings, Irvin (Cathy) Mason of Springville and Vera (Gary) Prisbey of St. George.
The family would like to express appreciation to the loving staff of the Lodge at Riverton for caring for Cecil for the past 18 months. We also want to express thanks to Cozy Health for hospice care.
