Carla Sawyer

Hurricane, Utah

Carla Humphries Sawyer, 70, passed away peacefully at home in Hurricane, Saturday, March 5, 2016. Carla was born July 10, 1945 in Cedar City, Utah to James Allen and Lucille Humphries. She graduated from Hurricane High School in 1963 and looked forward to meeting up with classmates at each class reunion.

Carla began her nursing career at Holy Cross Hospital as a nurse assistant and later became an LPN. She worked at Valley View Hospital in Cedar City, UT. While there, she had her daughter Lucinda and met the love of her life, LaVal Arnold Sawyer and his four children, whom she quickly loved as her own: Nicole, Kimball, Deon, and Pete. They were married July 10, 1970 in Hurricane. Their marriage was later solemnized in the St. George Temple.

Carla and LaVal lived and raised their family in Hatch, UT and had two more sons: Michael and Lance. During this time she had the opportunity to work at Garfield Memorial Hospital for nearly 30 years. She loved her career as a nurse and those with whom she worked. She served on the Utah State Board of Nursing for 10 years.

Carla loved time spent with family, enjoyed long camping trips with LaVal, and family reunions. If you knew Carla well, you also received a special "Happy Birthday" song each year; sang only as she could sing it.

Being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Carla served as Primary president, Relief Society president and in several other callings. One of her favorites was being a visiting teacher.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, LaVal; children: Nicole (Jeff) Rhees, Eager, AZ; Deon (Eric) Lathim, Fredonia, AZ; Pete (Colette) Sawyer, Salt Lake City; Lucinda (Ryan) Josie, Midway, UT; Michael (Sherri) Sawyer, Evanston, WY; Lance (Dennette) Sawyer, Hatch, UT; 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; brother, Norman Humphries. She is preceded in death by son, Kimball LaVal Sawyer; sister, Emma Rae Humphries; brothers, Bud and Allen, and parents.
