Carl Hughes
Surrounded by his loving family, Carl Wayne Hughes, 76, passed away June 26, 2011 in Gunnison, from complications from Diabetes. He was born April 7, 1935 in Nowata, OK to Charles Lee and Anna Sara Heath Hughes. He married Leora Ann Cromwell, December 17, 1971 in Fullerton, CA, she preceded him in death December 13, 2006.
Carl was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and uncle. He enjoyed many sports and lettered all four years in high school basketball. He became a member of the National Guard for 4 years. In 1958 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and became a Military Police Officer. He was stationed at White Sands, NM, which he spoke of often. After his time in the military he moved to California where he worked for Continental Can Company where he maintained very large ovens used in the manufacture of steel. He retired in 1985 after 22 years.
Dad enjoyed the outdoors and camping very much. He loved to tromp the streams looking for the best fishing holes. He thoroughly enjoyed the game of softball and coached in his younger years. If granddaughter Stephanie was playing, he was there, she was his pride and joy. He also enjoyed the many visits with his dear friend and neighbor, Joye.
He loved all of his 4 legged friends, they provided much comfort and happiness. He will be missed and loved by all who knew him and those who knew him would agree that he was a feisty and stubborn old man. Dad, you and Mom are together again and it was a warm and sunny day.
The family extends their appreciation to the medical staff at Gunnison Valley Hospital and Gunnison Valley EMS for their care and attention.
Carl is survived by his daughter, Chris "Tina" (Shon) Spencer of Centerfield and step-son, William "Bill" (Nicole) Owens of Joseph; 8 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Tawanda Hamilton of Nowata, OK.
