Beverly Scott

St. George, Utah

Beverly Ann Hall Gardner Scott, 83, passed away on September 24, 2017. She was born in Jerome, Arizona on September 29, 1933 to Leon and Flora "Flo" Seegmiller Hall. At age 3, the family moved to Winslow, Arizona and she spent her childhood there. When Beverly was 14 the family moved to Richfield, Utah where she graduated from high school in 1951. She then attended BYU, and was valedictorian of the 1955 summer graduating class. Beverly used her elementary education degree to teach school in Richfield, Utah, Mesa, Arizona and Cedar City, Utah and was known for her creative use of music and original rhymes to teach reading.

Beverly married W. Dallin Gardner on September 4, 1952 in the Manti Temple. They were blessed with six children: Lori, David Louis, Michelle, Annette, Carolee, and Matthew Douglas. During their 32-year marriage they lived coast to coast in Utah, Illinois, Delaware, and California.

On December 19, 1987 Beverly married George M. Scott in the St. George Temple, where they later served as ordinance workers and directors of the baptistry. They served an LDS mission in the Illinois Chicago Mission from 1990-91. George and Beverly enjoyed traveling to many parts of the world and made many trips to Canada to visit his family. He preceded her in death January 13, 2010.

"Grandma Bev" was a beloved grandmother to her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as to many "adopted" grandchildren. She loved children and was always ready to entertain them with her dramatic performances of favorite poems and songs, and by playing the "candy bar game." Bev was well known for the many poems she wrote throughout her life, documenting small and large gatherings and milestone events. She excelled at capturing the details and spirit of celebrations with family and friends through rhyme.

Throughout her life, Beverly had a great love for the Savior and a strong testimony of the restored gospel. While serving in the Primary as "Grandma Friendly," she composed an original song to teach children the important elements of a testimony and through it, shared her own as a lasting legacy for her posterity.

"My Testimony"

I’ll bear my testimony. It’s what I want to do.

For I love Heavn’ly Father and I love Jesus, too.

This is my testimony that Jesus is God’s Son.

When they appeared to Joseph Smith a great work was begun.

I know a living prophet still leads and guides the way.

I know the gospel was restored in this the latter day.

I’m grateful for the scriptures. The Spirit says, "They’re true."

They are God’s words for us on earth. They tell us what to do.

I’ll bear my testimony I know the church is true,

I’m thankful for my fam’ly; they help to see me through.

I’ll bear my testimony. And I will live it, too!

My friends will know what I believe by what I say and do.

Beverly is survived by her children: Lori (Brad) Squires, David Louis (Kathy) Gardner, Michelle (Daryl) Jones, Annette (Mark) Myers, and Matthew Douglas Gardner; her step-children: Norman Scott, Judith (Dan) Pope, Leonard Scott, Susan (Tim) Taylor, Cathy (Dave) Sandberg, Jan (Mark) Severts, Matt (Jody) Valantine, Tricia (Dan) Utley, and Bryan (Nicolle) Scott; and a large posterity of 64 grandchildren and 130 great grandchildren from both of her families.

She was also preceded in death by her infant daughter, Carolee; her parents; her siblings and their spouses, Robert (Gloria) Hall, and Carol (Donald) Crofts.

The family expresses gratitude to the staff at Zion’s Way Hospice for the professional and loving personal care they provided during the final weeks of Beverly’s life. Deb Rozema, her hospice nurse, showed extraordinary competence, sensitivity, compassion, tenderness, and love in caring for her.
