Bernetta Hendrickson Nay, age 84, passed away in Centerfield, Utah, on September 7, 2013. Bernetta was born May 31, 1929, in Gunnison, to Oras Christian and Josie Jensen Hendrickson. She was one of seven children, growing up on the family farm in Clarion, Utah, where she worked hard, but also enjoyed great fun with her sisters, cousins and friends, often recalling an ideal childhood.
Bernetta graduated from Gunnison Valley High School in 1947 and soon married her sweetheart of 60 years, Ivan Eugene Nay, who had joined her graduating class after returning from his naval service in World War II. Eugene and Bernetta married on November 26, 1947, and established their own farm in Centerfield. They were blessed with five daughters and one son; deciding to move their growing family to the town of Gunnison soon after the fourth daughter arrived.
Bernetta was an exceptional homemaker and helpmate to her husband, possessing a natural kindness and interest in others. She created a home where happy children played and grew up without worry. Her husband and many others affectionately called her “Bird.”
She is survived by five children: Lynda (Errol) Hammond, Deer Lodge, MT; Doris (Reed) Embley, Layton; Betty (Lin) Heyborne, Mona; Nedra (Dale) Peterson, Gunnison; and Rodney (Joann) Nay, Centerfield; son-in-law, Lee Anderson. A daughter, Marie Anderson, died in August 1983, and her husband, Ivan Eugene Nay, died in November 2007. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren; as well as three siblings, Norma (Clyde) Peterson, Phyllis Hansen, and Hal (Robyn) Hendrickson; brother-in-law, Lloyd Davis.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and three siblings, Jean (Bruce) Fjeldsted, Myrna (LuDon) Jensen, and Enid Davis; brother-in-law, Doug Hansen.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 13, 2013 at 12:00 Noon in the Gunnison Stake Center where friends may call Thursday from 6:00-8:00 p.m., and Friday from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Burial will be at the Gunnison City Cemetery. Funeral Directors: Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti.
