Bennie E. Mortensen passed away on August 20, 2013 at the George E. Wahlen Ogden Veteran Home. Bennie was born March 1, 1928 in Ephraim, Utah the favorite and only son of Edghiell and Rachel Mortensen. Growing up in Ephraim, Ben attended Ephraim Elementary, Junior High and Snow High School. He participated in many activities including basketball, baseball, football, debate and theater. While attending Snow College he was drafted in the Army and served in Europe during the Korean War.
After being discharged from the Army he attended Utah State University graduating with a BS degree in History and Political Science as well as a Teaching Certificate. He also attended Salt Lake Community College and obtained a realtor’s license. After graduating from Utah State, he spent several years running the family farm in Ephraim. He later worked for Mr. Mac in Salt Lake City and then ended up working as a guard for a power plant in Henderson, NV. While working in Henderson, Ben suffered a debilitating stroke that left him partially paralyzed and has been a challenge for him the past twenty years.
Ben was an avid sports fan and supported Snow College teams while he was in Ephraim. He could tell you something about the players and their families of almost any High School, Junior College, or University player throughout Utah. Ben also followed the Rodeo Circuit and was knowledgeable about the cowboys.
He is survived by a son, David (Heidi) Mortensen and a sister, Molly (Noel) Cooley, of Logan. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Patsy (William) Kruger, Rae Ann
A family viewing and memorial service was held on September 6, 2013 at the Magleby Mortuary, Manti. Interment was in the Ephraim Park Cemetery with Military Rites by the Manti American Legion Post #31 and the Utah Honor Guard. Funeral Directors: Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti.
