Alta Peterson
Glenwood, Utah
Alta Oldroyd Peterson, 89, beloved friend, neighbor, aunt and sister passed away on April 19, 2020 in Glenwood. She was born on January 14, 1931 in Glenwood to John David Oldroyd and Tessie Mae Bell. She married Ralph Harold Peterson on June 10, 1953; the marriage was solemnized in the Manti Temple on January 16, 1963. He preceded her in death March 16, 2015.
Alta came into this world with an outgoing and vivacious personality. She had many friends and people loved to be around her spunkiness and cheerfulness. She always loved to sing and sang in the Richfield High School chorus and was a member of the Triple Trio. One year she was able to sing in the Tabernacle on Temple Square for General Conference.
Ralph was the love of Alta’s life. The first time she saw him he was just going out to do chores wearing an old hat, coat and boots. Alta took one look at him and thought, "Oh boy! He’s neat!" Sometime after Ralph came home from serving in World War II they began dating. They went to movies or for rides up on the mountain in Ralph’s old jeep.
Alta and Ralph kept that love of traveling and visited many places in the western United States. Some of the most memorable were Lake Murray, Carlsbad Caverns, and Capitol Reef National Park.
With their large garden area behind their home, Ralph and Alta grew prize-winning produce—both for size and flavor. One year they grew 50 onions weighing in at 2 pounds or more. They also grew delicious tomatoes, beets, corn and cantaloupe. Alta was known for her home-bottled dill pickles and many of her great-grandnieces and nephews have memories of picking dill weed outside her home.
Alta lived in Glenwood her entire life and loved her home and the people surrounding her. She thought it a peaceful place and loved to bike the lanes with Ralph. She always had a smile for those who stopped by to say hello and had a special talent for making people laugh. She could see the good in people and helped them see it in themselves. She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Leila Oldroyd, Glenwood; nieces and nephews: Linda Newman, Sandy; Mary Ann Peterson, Glenwood; Mae Beth Anderson, Glenwood; VerDon Washburn, Monroe; Ronald Oldroyd, Salt Lake City; John Oldroyd, Houston, TX; Gordon Oldroyd, Monroe; Roger Oldroyd, Glenwood, Michael Oldroyd, St. George.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; siblings: Deveda Washburn, VerDon, Rue, Lynn, and Gethin Oldroyd; niece Twila Willden; nephew, Ivan Washburn.
