Alma Joel Frandsen, 75, passed away peacefully November 15, 2014 in Provo, from complications due to a stroke. Joel was born March 28, 1939 in Elsinore to Alma Warren and Ida Conder Frandsen. He was an alumnus of South Sevier High School and Utah State University. He married Kerry Allred of Spring City in 1963 and are the parents of three children.
Joel served 34 years as a forester with the US Forest Service in Wyoming, Idaho, Nevada, and Utah; and five years as the Utah State Forester. He was proud to serve as the national chair of the Smokey Bear Committee. Joel received many awards and accolades for his accomplishments and leadership with charitable and professional organizations.
Joel had a great love of horses, mountains, western folklore, story telling, natural resources, Fox News, the vanishing western way of life and was a staunch advocate of the "Multiple Use – Sustained Yield" Act. Joel was an expert in western outlaw history; spending many hours researching, publishing and speaking. He was an active member of the LDS Church and lived by the motto "Enjoy the Journey."
He is survived by his wife of 52 years; children: Dan, SLC; Justin (Heidi), Lehi; Lara (Don) Ross, TX; and his "nother" son, Derek (Heather) Coulter, Draper; nine spirited grandchildren: Tanner, Kaitlyn, Kylie, Daxon, Jayce, Noah, Sophia, Avabelle and Lola; sisters: Bonnie (RG) Ross, Arcadia, CA; and Vickie (Jay) Pehrson, Fresno, CA.
Preceded in death by parents.
Funeral services will be held Monday, November 24, 2014 at 12:00 Noon in the Elsinore Ward Chapel. Friends may call Sunday from 6-8 p.m. at the Magleby Mortuary, 50 South 100 West, Richfield, and Monday from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. at the ward chapel in Elsinore. Burial will be in the Elsinore Cemetery. Funeral Directors: Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti.
