Alice Henrie
Panguitch, Utah
Alice Riding Henrie, 93, was reunited with her sweetheart Lowell V Henrie, Sr. on October 6, 2016, in St. George, a day she had longed for more than 14 years. Through her long life, this elect woman fulfilled her callings as wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend with love, grace, elegance, and class.
Though Alice lost her own mother the day after she was born, July 11, 1923, she was raised, loved, and treasured by two wonderful sets of foster parents. Through her early teenage years, she lived in Panguitch UT with Uncle James M. and Aunt Mary Ellen Riding Sargent whom she called Mom and Pops. After Mom Sargent’s death, Alice became a part of Archie and Leonia Sargent Cameron’s family in Springville UT where she loved Elliot and Mary as her brother and sister. In Springville she made life-long friends and graduated from high school, but Panguitch, her birthplace, became her home because of that handsome Lowell Henrie.
Their partnership began on October 2, 1942, and became an eternal companionship when they were later sealed in the St. George LDS Temple. Dad set a high standard for their posterity in the way he cherished Mom and always treated her with love, respect, and kindness—with just a pinch of teasing. Mom flourished in the bonds of that loving, secure marriage as they raised their sons, working alongside Dad as a full partner in ranching, business, and meeting life’s challenges.
Mom was a superb homemaker who could cook, sew, bake, can, make peanut butter fudge without a recipe, clean, organize, decorate the house and maintain a beautiful yard, all in an elegant way on a thrifty budget. In addition to doing all that, she worked outside the home as a telephone operator during the "Number, please" era, and also many years as a secretary. Later she focused on assisting Dad in his many business ventures. Active in civic affairs, Mom was a member of Lady Lions, the Panguitch Homemakers, and Soil Conservation Auxiliary. One of Alice’s traits was to always be busy doing things with great perfection for her family and others, and that drive never left her.
A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mom served in many Relief Society callings. She is renowned for her compassionate service, especially in making countless batches of delicious hot rolls. In later years, she enjoyed doing temple work.
Her legacy of family love will be honored by those who survive her, sons: J Richard (Bonnie) Henrie, Washington City; Lowell V (Janis) Henrie, Jr., Panguitch; Robert Val (Lorraine) Henrie, Gunnison; and Michael Lee Henrie, Murray; 13 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. Her earthly posterity will increase very soon by two additional great-grandchildren and another great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by sisters: Joan Riding Benson, Phoenix AZ, and Jean Riding Robinson, Bountiful UT.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband; parents: Jed Arthur and Alice Edith Stevens Riding; and a brother, Arthur J. Riding.
Heartfelt thanks go to those who gave Mom daily loving care these past 4 years at Ridgeview Gardens Assisted Living in St. George. And much appreciation to Dr. J Scott Parkinson plus Cindy, Georgia, Kim, and Vanessa of Dixie Hospice who cared for Mom and us these last few months.
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 14, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. in the Panguitch 1st Ward, 550 South 100 West, where friends may call from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Panguitch Cemetery. Funeral Directors: Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti.
